Christmas under attack by… Christians

January 5, 2011 News No Comments

Candy Cane Lane, an Edmonton neighbourhood which puts Tim Taylor like effort into Christmas decorations for the purpose of raising Food Bank donations, was targeted by a group of Santa haters.

One resident recieved a rubber thumb in her mailbox, another a fake skeleton wearing Santa’s red suit. Several residents received letters critical of Christmas. Alert the local conservative media to make up a controversy.

The letter contained the supposedly “anti-Christian” message that children should be told Santa is not real (sorry, Edmonton Sun, that’s more anti-Coca-Cola, try again) and directed readers to a website about the harmful effects of Christmas on children (sorry again Sun, that’s an explicitly Christian site).

Blessed Be Those Who Have Cellphones

September 3, 2010 News 1 Comment

In an effort to stem the bleeding of Anglican church membership nationwide, Halifax-based Anglican Rev. Lisa Vaughn has asked cellphone, laptop, and technological gadgets in to receive a special blessing this weekend.

Vaughn says in an interview “It’s not just about please don’t let my cellphone drop calls today. It’s about, you know, help me to be the best Christian, the best person I can be in my conversations, in my communication.”

Personally, I’m not too hopeful of her chances of increasing attendance too much with this initiative, but I am a little curious. If I had her bless my Xbox controller, would I be playing with the Holy Fist of God on my side?

Religion vs. scary Twilight vampires sent by Satan

August 23, 2010 News 2 Comments

Twilight may be an abomination unto literature, but did you know it’s an abomination unto God as well? That’s according to Mark Driscoll, the hip Seattle pastor (see, he’s hip because he dresses like the cool kids and has charisma) watchable above.

If you didn’t know, books about vampires contain subject matter like “sorcery, witchcraft, divination, [and] wicca,” not to mention dead people who talk to you from beyond the grave. That shit is the Devil’s work, says Driscoll.

I don’t think the pastor needs to worry too much, I’ve heard his buddy Jesus can hold his own against vampires pretty well.

Don’t Worry Folks… Harry Potter Still Rocks

Part I: According to Fanfiction.net,
Harry Potter Still Rocks

Guilty secret: I read fan fiction.

Perhaps you’ve never heard of it. Fan fictions, affectionately known as fan fics, are basically self-explanatory. It’s “new” works of fiction written by fans of certain literature. Hence, fan fiction. The stories are based on the characters and environments in the original work. I liken it to music, where musicians regularly cover each others’ work to create something new and different, but made from the same base. For example, a Harry Potter fan fiction may contain a plot where Lily leaves a letter for Harry to read in the future, confessing that Severus Snape is actually his father, not James Potter. Or a Lord of the Rings fan fiction may revolve around a complicated romance between Legolas and Aragorn. Anything can happen. In fact, some fan fics can get pretty smutty, spelling out the romantic and lusty scenes we all envision between our favourite pairings that never actually get published. Or even acknowledged by the author, depending.

The nerds fight back: Westboro Baptist Church meets counter protest at Comic-Con

July 22, 2010 News 4 Comments

In what I’ve already decided is the feel good story of the year, Westboro Baptist Church nutters protesting supposedly idol-worshiping attendees of the San Diego Comic-Con were overwhelmed by a counter protest filled with dorks and weirdos.

A pitiful handful of WBCers showed up to promote their ideology of hate, while a significantly larger crowd on the other side of the street held up signs proclaiming “All Glory to the Hypno-Toad,” “God Hates Jedi,” and “Odin is God,” among other things.

Check out Comics Alliance for a pile of pics.
