The Nerd Olympics 2010

Hello and welcome to Shufflingdead’s annual look back at the world’s most grueling and infamous two-day, liquor soaked, Pizza-Pop-encrusted sweat fest, the Nerd Olympics.

A special message from Newbs: We posted an opt-out sheet at Nerd Olympics for those who didn’t want to appear in the videos, but no such sheet was available for photos. We’ve never had a problem posting pictures from previous Nerd Olympics, but if you don’t want your picture to appear in this article, or on Shufflingdead more broadly, please let me know. For the Shufflingdead readership sick of hearing about Nerd Olympics, don’t worry, this article will be it until next year.

This year’s official slogan came from the classic film and Nerd Olympics favourite, Starship Troopers:

Nerd Olympics 2010 Games Preview Part III

This week, sulci takes a look at the last 4 event taking place at Nerd Olympics this year: Mario Kart Wii, Halo 3, Rock Band 2 and Nerd Trivia.

Mario Kart Wii

Mario Kart Wii
The sixth game in the Mario Kart series, Mario Kart Wii adds motorcycles, a bunch of new characters, and a huge collection of 32 tracks to race on. The Wii version also allows you to steer your cart or bike with a steering wheel, although Nerd Olympians will have the option to use Classic Controller as well.

This year the INOC has decided to run 4 player races on random maps. Items will be set to strategic (no shells). The top two players of each heat move on to the finals. Tiebreakers will be a single run on the course Delfino, so make sure you practice that one. You can practice Mario Kart on any Nintendo console.

What if there was an Olympics for, like, nerds?

We all know of the athletic excellence on display every year at the Nerd Olympics, but does gaming have a place at that other Olympics?

Canadian magazine Maclean’s recently pondered that very question in an article entitled “Will there ever be a Olympic medal for ‘Call of Duty’?” The publication spoke with CEO of the Global Gaming League Ted Owen, who claims “gaming has its place in the world stage.” He feels, and rightly so, “it’s the same skills as if you were a hockey player or a baseball player, anything like that.”

Owen argues that pro gamers in China and Korea are treated like celebrities, where people have the proper respect for a well-timed Zerg rush. I think he also uses the term “eSports,” but maybe Maclean’s just made that up. In any case, Owen hasn’t gotten very far; the IOC continues to ignore his pleas for Olympic gaming.

Superhero and Olympic gold medalist for snowboarding Ross Rebagliati opposes Mr. Owen’s idea. Despite coming up in a time when snowboarding lacked recognition in professional athletics, Rebagliati has no respect for gaming as a sport. He claims “sport has to have some kind of physical act.” I guess Ross never played that game in Mario Party where you have to rotate the joystick really fast.
