A few Nintendo super-fan photos to marvel at

July 12, 2010 Newbs 1 Comment

The image to the left recently popped up on Digg thanks to its shocking value as gawk material.

The picture is of a man named Will, who put the cabinet together at 13 in an effort to combine his loves of the NES and the arcade.

Will over there has gotten me inspired to post some of the other shocking Nintendo super-fan images that have circulated the internet over the years, and that I’ve managed to hang on to. If you got more, please add links to them in the comments section, or email them in.

Remember, don’t be too hard on these guys. You’ve probably got your own super-fan photos buried somewhere, the internet just hasn’t found them yet.

Porn actor goes fucking crazy

June 12, 2010 News No Comments

Stephen Hill’s porn name was Steve Driver, and not long ago he was probably best known for playing Obama in that vital cultural artifact, Palin: Erection ’08. That is, until he went on a sword-equipped rampage, attacking three of his porn-production coworkers, killing one. The departed was Mr. Tom Dong, a man Hill had acted with a number of times.

Even more astonishing, Hill followed up that adventure with an eight-hour stand-off with police in which he threatened to kill himself with a samurai sword (presumably the same one he used previously). That incident concluded with Hill jumping off a fucking cliff and killing himself.

Current speculation holds that Hill was upset for being fired from Ultima DVD Inc., the place where he also lived.

Gamers better at controlling their dreams

June 10, 2010 News 1 Comment

Edmonton, Alberta based researcher Jayne Gackenbach has been conducting an investigation into our “other” realities – our dreams. It seems there may be a link between gaming and lucid dreaming, an especially awesome state of dreaming in which you can become aware of, and take control of your own dream.

Gackenbach has found gamers are more likely to have lucid dreams, and that they experience those kinds of dreams differently. In dream situations in which the dreamer is faced with a threatening situation, that person is more likely to turn and fight the challenge, turning nightmares into fun. Gamers were also found to flip between first and third person perspectives within their dreams. Zelda, anyone?

The Grant MacEwan psychologist became interested in video games after a car ride in the 90s with her son. He was repeatedly kissing an unnamed “new Nintendo gaming console.”

Wii game inspires hate, rage

May 8, 2010 News No Comments

Echoing the WoW-induced rampage from earlier this year, we’ve got another story about a raging gamer.

An as-yet unnamed Wii game was the catalyst for a violent rampage by one James Williams. The tirade began with the rager biting his mother’s ankle, which was followed by hitting someone with his car, ramming several other vehicles, crashing into a tree, and then taking up arms in the form of a B.B. gun against another car’s window. In defiance of the police, once they arrived, Williams also threw himself at their car, and was promptly tased.

As to the identity of the game, speculation has ranged from Just Dance to the purple coin challenges of Mario Galaxy.

Another stupid wedding: this time it’s through Twitter

April 2, 2010 News No Comments

We’ve reported on people marrying video game characters and pillows, but this is the first time I can recall discussing a marriage between two people. It still feels like the dumbest one yet.

Greg Rewis proposed to Stephanie Sullivan two years ago via Twitter with this classic line “@stefsull – ok. for the rest of the twitter-universe (and this is a first, folks) – WILL YOU MARRY ME?” She accepted the proposal with the reply: “@garazi – OMG – Ummmmm… I guess in front of the whole twitter-verse I’ll say — I’d be happy to spend the rest of my geek life with you.” I suppose the pair thought other people on the internet actually cared, and that they would not live in eternal shame for unironically using terms live “Twitter-verse.”

Now, the couple is planning to have their marriage live-Tweeted by various children of previous marriages. The couple had originally planned to Tweet their vows themselves, but a lone voice of reason begged Sullivan “please don’t sit there at your computers and type it in.”

Wedding guests will reportedly be required to do a tequila slammer as they arrive. They’ll need it.
