Question of the Week: What Game Announcements Have Got You All Excited?

July 10, 2010 Question 4 Comments

Recently, some of the big gaming-industry leaders attended a giant expo to showcase upcoming equipment and titles. I think it was called G3 or E2 or something. Whatever.

Nerds are an excitable bunch, so this week we at shufflingdead.com want to know which announcements have you quivering in anticipation. Which titles have you salivating for the glorious images assaulting your eyes? What hardware has your fingers itching to feel its powers in your hands? Which games have lit the fire of competition in your hearts? Tell us, because, yeah, it’s important and stuff.

Please note that we’ve taken your responses from last week’s question into consideration and enabled commenting without the need to sign up! Check out the comment form below (or after the jump, as the case may be).

10 Ways to Improve The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for 3DS

June 24, 2010 Games 6 Comments

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is frequently referred to as the greatest video game of all time, and rightfully so. Ocarina brought Hyrule to life with stunning polygonal graphics and revolutionary controls. Now, nearly 12 years since its release, comes word that this beloved game is being remade for the Nintendo 3DS.

With the madness of E3 2010 receding into the past, it’s time to take a hard look at Ocarina of Time in its original form, assess the hints we’ve been given so far with regards to its 3DS remake, and ponder the possibilities. What follows is my wishlist for the upcoming 3DS version of Ocarina of Time.

Haters gonna hate: an Apple fanboy at E3

June 21, 2010 News 2 Comments

Chris Holt of Macworld is back from E3 2010, and he is not impressed. In addition to his totally reasonable argument about a lack of originality from the hardware and software manufacturers of the gaming industry, he’s also pretty convinced of the impending doom of Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, all at the hands of Apple. It seems:

The Nintendo 3DS will sell like gangbusters but it still doesn’t signal that Nintendo has any understanding of how the mobile market is changing. Sure, the 3DS has 3D graphics without glasses–but also without a sense of perspective. That is to say, Apple is eating their market and Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime is sitting in the white Buick with the devil as they go over the cliff, laughing, a la Thelma and Louise.

[...]

The three big console developers, previously unchallenged in their supremacy, have become complacent swine, out of touch with the modern gamer. They keep making games that they already made because they know they will sell, not because they will be challenging, creative, or fun. How many times has Zelda been remade? Do we really need yet another Mortal Kombat, Twisted Metal, or Halo game? The snake is eating its own tail.

I’ve been known to get a little excited about any and all potential downfall of Nintendo competitors, but I can always claim sarcasm. This guy seems entirely serious about his words. After all, he began his article “As I type this on my MacBook Pro…,” and an Apple fanboy would never lie to his MacBook.

It’s official: Nintendo won E3 2010

June 20, 2010 News 1 Comment

Now that we’ve all had time to reflect on the bonanza of awesome that was E3 2010, it’s time to decide just who the champion was. “Winning” E3, by the way, is a vital component in all fanboy wars related to gaming on the internet, but is generally irrelevant otherwise, although I don’t quite see it that way this year.

Certain tech blogs are a little confused on the issue. Engadget claims Microsoft to be the winner. Maybe that’s the free 360s Microsoft gave away talking. Gizmodo has announced Sony to be the loser of the year, which is not totally unreasonable. General internet hate has been directed at Microsoft more than Sony, but at least Kinect has got people talking. Sony comes away from E3 with a total absence of buzz.

None of this is especially relevant, the true champion of E3 is decided by the angry masses over on NeoGAF, and a quick scroll through the votes shows Nintendo to have taken the expo by a wide margin. Only a grass-roots movement ironically supporting the disastrous Konami presentation rivals Nintendo’s popularity amongst posters there.

These results are interesting, and tell quite a dangerous story for Nintendo’s competition. The reason the company “won” is obvious. These are the hardest of “hard core” gamers voting, and they saw more from the company that they want than they did from Sony and Microsoft. While those two companies are busy chasing the “casual” money Nintendo grabbed years ago, Nintendo’s is hard at work gobbling up the crowd they’ve just now abandoned. Unfortunately for Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo has already established itself in the casual space, and continues to produce software to cater to, and keep, that demographic.

E3 2010: Miyamoto is not impressed

June 17, 2010 News No Comments

Mark Wilson of Gizmodo had a chance to try out some of Microsoft’s Kinect during E3, but it seems he had a couple lookers-on who were not all that impressed. Photographic evidence suggests there were at least two haters in the crowd.

What would normally have been a candid nerd moment turned out to be a revealing glimpse into the emotions of the world’s greatest man. You can see Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto himself, alongside translator Bill Trinen, scoping out Nintendo’s competition.

Neither man looks entirely excited about controller-less motion control.
