Speculating on the new Nintendo 3DS
Following last night’s shocking news that Nintendo’s new handheld will be the 3DS, and feature 3D effects without glasses comes an outpouring of speculation and commentary.
Nikkei is saying the system will have a control stick instead of d-pad, better wireless speed and battery life than the current DS, and screens smaller than 4 inches. Yomiuri Shimbun claims that the 3D effect is achieved with a film slightly separated from the screen.
Gaming industry guru and prolific guesser Michael Pachter has come up with some typical analyst fiction. Pachter says he doesn’t understand how 3D can be accomplished without glasses, and so the 3DS will obviously either introduce revolutionary technology or, you’ve heard this word before, be a “gimmick.” He’s surprised Apple didn’t beat Nintendo to the 3D punch, and expects them to mimic Nintendo if this technology is legit.
It is still unclear why analysts believe any and all things Nintendo does should be labeled gimmicks until proven otherwise.
