Pachter doubts the power of Nintendo’s upcoming E3

May 12, 2010 News 2 Comments

Eurogamer has just posted a mighty interview with Shameful Human Michael Pachter. The whole thing is certainly worth a read if you’re interested in finding out how much the Pach-attack works, what kind of shockingly massive power he wields, and why he feels, despite what everyone says, he really does know what he’s talking about. That’s hardly what you’re here for, though. You want to know what outlandish Nintendo hate he was spewing this time, don’t you? Well have a look:

Eurogamer: Let’s talk about E3. Who would you rather be: Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony?

Michael Pachter: It really depends on this 3DS and how good it is, because I don’t think Nintendo has anything else. Nintendo is on the verge of – certainly not dropping into third place or anything – losing its dominance, because I really truly believe that Sony Move is the Wii HD. I really believe it. That’s been my quote: I told everyone a Wii HD was coming this year, it just happens to say PS3 on the box. It is the Wii HD.

That’s a very easy upsell for Sony to say, “If you have a Wii and you really want to play high-def games on your new big high-def TV, we’ve got ‘em.” Sony is a winner and Nintendo is a loser on the console side, because the Wii Vitality Sensor isn’t going to excite anybody. But the 3DS will. If you look at Nintendo’s line-up, everything we care about is either out or known by now.

Longer term, Nintendo does really start to look bad as Apple really starts to push the iPod Touch as a gaming device, and that’s happening this holiday. Again, the gaming press hasn’t figured it out. The gaming press doesn’t really understand the 12-year-old customer, nor do you guys care. Who plays DS games? Them, not us. Nintendo’s got problems this year but the 3DS will make them look great at E3.

Well, that’s a hell of a lot of crazy to take in all at once. Pachter repeatedly admitted in the interview that he’s wrong all the time, and that he doesn’t care, so I suppose he’s ready to be wrong on this, too. Mr. The Pach clearly doesn’t understand Nintendo’s blue ocean strategy, nor the lack of broad appeal a pricey add-on for a pricey console really holds. He also seems to be missing out on the fact that this E3, Nintendo’s got Zelda, 3DS games (not just 3DS hardware), and whatever else they’ve been secretly developing.

On your shameful human of the week post, I wasn’t 100% convinced about how much he hated Nintendo, I thought he made sense.

Now I’m not so sure. Sony is better cuz they can HD the WII? Nintendo can HD the WII themselves and “level” the playing field, except the WII has also been out already for 4+ years and has a shit ton of games.

I wish I could still get a paycheck as a research analyst without doing any research…not to mention publicly stating that he’s wrong and doesn’t care if he’s wrong. Now THAT’S job security.
