Nintendo dominates Sony in brand value
So-called business “analysts” love to hate on Nintendo and its Wii, but success is famously hard to argue with. That’s why I feel vindicated to announce that Millward Brown’s annual list of the Top 100 Most Valuable Brands places Nintendo well ahead of Sony. In the overall rankings, Nintendo checks in at number 32, while Sony squanders at 94. The top five overall came to be: Google, IBM, Apple, Microsoft, and Coca-Cola.
You might be thinking “but Microsoft is way ahead of Nintendo, this list is bullshit!” Well, it’s important to remember that Microsoft does a hell of a lot more than makes games, and so Millward Brown has included a section in its report specifically for games, likely to provide bitter fanboys like me something to argue about. The games list is even more amusing, with the Wii ranked first, followed by the DS, then the 360, PS3, PSP, and finally, the PS2.
Those rankings are determined by something called “estimate value,” which is defined as “the dollar value of each brand in the ranking is the sum of all future earnings that brand is forecast to generate, discounted to a present-day value.” Suck it, Sony.
