January NPD results illustrate Nintendo’s unyielding glory

US video games sales results for January 2010 are finally in, and while the results are generally positive, they are not of the same quality as December, which was what I would describe as a “holy” month for the good guys.
Nintendo still blew past their pathetic rivals, with the Wii and DS far outselling even their closest competitors. Sadly, the Wii could have done even better if the console were not supply constrained yet again. The Wii sold 465.8K, compared with the 360 at 332.8K. The DS outsold the PSP at a 4:1 ratio, which is as good a sign as any that Sony should just fold up and quit before they embarrass themselves any further.
Last month, I made one safe prediction and one wild one, and the results are as expected. I was right, of course, that Nintendo would dominate the competition in January. However, No More Heroes 2 most assuredly did not crack the top 10 software list. The title only sold about 30K units, needing at least 140K more to have even had a chance. Thankfully, New Super Mario Bros. Wii still came in first in software with 656.7K units sold, making a mockery of the haters.
My predictions for February 2010 are as follows: Nintendo dominates, Wii surges ahead thanks to resupply, and No More Heroes 2 ramps up from its slow burn and actually manages to break into the top 10.
