China out of the running for Mr. Gay World 2010
People going to this year’s Mr. Gay China pageant in Beijing were disappointed after Chinese police canceled the pageant following some procedural fuck-ups by the people organizing the event. This, despite a dress rehearsal the previous night having gone smoothly. Some are left wondering whether there were “other” reasons for the cancellation, marking a huge step back by the Chinese government, especially after the cancellation of part of some gay pride festivals by the authorities last June.
Homosexuality has only been legal since 1997 in China, and although the government has been making progress, paving the way for the fruit-iziation of their nation, they must not have been prepared for the chance that a new gay icon could be so closely associated with thier own country.
The winner would have gone on to be a delegate for Mr. Gay Worldwide 2010, which will be held in Oslo, Norway on February 10-14th. The annual Mr. Gay Worldwide competition was first held last year in Whistler, BC and won by Mr. Max Krzyzanowski of Ireland, pictured above. The winner becomes an international ambassador for Gay and Human Rights in both queer and mainstream media. 32-40 delegates are expected to compete this year, including delegates from Hong Kong and of course, Canada.
