The Dungeon’s Boss: Q1 2010 update, and some Games Played

Already being over a month overdue for what is supposed to be a quarterly update to my games collection database, I have decided that it is now time to make that update. The database now reflects additions and subtractions made to my disturbingly/arousingly large games collection during the first three months of 2010. Since March, a significant number of changes have taken place, but I’ll have to refrain from adding those until the Q2 update.

Quarter 1 saw some incredible changes to my collection. I managed to beat-back the over-heavy presences of both unbeaten GBA games and RPGs. I found $1 copy Space Iinvaders for the Atari 2600 which, for the time being, has no system to be played on, and picked up some NES classics on the cheap, those being Lolo 3, Metal Gear, Blastermaster, and Hogan’s Alley.

Perhaps most significantly, I also picked up a PS1 (at the same thrift store I found the Atari game), along with my first PS1 game, WipeOut XL. I’m excited for another opportunity to check out how the “other half” was living, this time from the era when I was focused on blasting Russians in GoldenEye.

Summer 2010 To-Do List: Weskimo Edition

May 8, 2010 Weskimo 4 Comments

Every year, I read Newbs’ list for the summer and think “none of that is going to happen…”  This time, something was different, though.  This year, I got some kind of seventeenth sense that some of it might actually get done!  I don’t know how, and for most of it, I most assuredly do not know why, but he’s going to do it!

This left me thinking, as I often do, of myself.  I also have goals for every summer, though never immortalized in list-form, I tend to have assorted vagaries and wispy notions floating around in my head that represent the list.  I don’t know if you folks have ever tried to accomplish a vagary before, but I’ll tell you, it’s still pretty damn vague when you’re done.  And you’re left with a confused feeling whenever you look back on the summer, wondering if you actually accomplished any of your lofty (if poorly defined) goals.

Well, no more! Behold! Concrete evidence of my goals this summer!  Take that, Weskimo’s directionally-challenged mind! Eat progress this summer!

Summer 2010 To-Do List

May 3, 2010 Newbs 7 Comments

The summer of 2009 saw me run a certain To-Do List here at Shufflingdead.com, and to great success. Pursuing the list led me to all kinds of fun adventures, ranging from the simple act of cackling like a comic book villain, to the staggering accomplishment of writing every day, and yet it did so much more, as well. I began the summer of 2009 lethargic and unmotivated, in fact, I was leading a largely sedentary life. By the end of the summer, I was employed, slightly physically active, and on my way to taking Shufflingdead.com to the dizzying heights of near-success we are at today.

I concluded the summer of ’09 promising to annualize the list and bring it back for 2010. I’m a lot busier heading into the summer of 2010, largely thanks to last year’s work, and undertaking this endeavour will certainly be difficult, but that’s exactly the sort of exciting challenge that define these kinds of lists.

Please note: there are repeats from last year, some because I never got them done, others because I’m excited to try them again. Instead of the weekly updates I ran last year, I will only be posting monthly updates for 2010, one each in the early days of June, July, August, and September.

A long post about a long journey to success-ville

April 25, 2010 Newbs 1 Comment

It’s been about a year since I began working on Shufflingdead with true earnest, and I thought I’d take a moment to reflect on how far the site has come since then, and where I plan to take things in the future.

If you have a look at the Archives drop down to the right, you’ll see that updates in March and April of 2009 were pretty minimal; they began to increase in May and June before taking off in July. That output has yielded clear results; hits are up about 750% from a year ago.

Content volume can’t take all the credit, however, as sulci’s tireless work on the site’s layout has certainly helped. I’d roughly call Shufflingdead’s current form Version 13 (Version 12 being her initial redesign), and it’s about as professional, clean, and sleek as I can imagine it.
