Miss America's first decree: eliminate video games

Saturday saw the crowning of a new Miss America, and her first order of business was to start a fight with video games. Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron, in her winner’s interview, decried games, stating “Take away the TV, take away the video games, set some standards for our children!”

It’s a disturbing attack from an important cultural icon, relevant to dozens at least. Let’s analyze this new enemy’s statement briefly. She demands that TV and video games be taken away because, apparently, not doing so sets a poor standard for children. I suppose she believes that a life filled with TV watching and gaming is a lazy one, prone to fathood.

The anti-gaming sentiment is tremendously hypocritical, considering that, in addition to her role as fun-hater, this new Miss America will be spokesperson for IHOP’s National Pancake Day. That’s technically a charity event, but it surely promotes IHOP as well, home of many fat-building breakfast foods. Maybe she’s still trying to impress Miss America 2010 celebrity judge Rush Limbaugh.

Full Worldwake spoiler now online

The latest Magic the Gathering expansion, Worldwake, won’t be available until February 5th, but the full visual spoiler is now available online.

The set picks up where Zendikar left off, with themes like the creature type “Ally” and Equipment popping up all over the place. No word if the set will contain the surprise “Priceless Treasures” of Zendikar, although it seems unlikely.

Worldwake also sets up for its follow-up, Rise of the Eldrazi, which will be the third set of the Zendikar block. Rise of the Eldrazi will actually be the size of a large set, unique because only the first set in a block is typically a “large” set. The design decision was made specifically to grate on my obsessive compulsive disorder.

Rise of the Eldrazi will have, not surprisingly, a lot to do with these Eldrazi guys, and Worldwake teases them with the card to the right, Eye of Ugin. In the new set, there are no Eldrazi, so this particular mythic rare is quite useless for now, but I suspect it will be a pretty important card once that third set is out.

Hit the jump to see a few choice cards from the set, or check this out to see the full set.
